About This Place

Nestled on the second floor of the Fairway supermarket at 2131 Broadway, Fairway 74th Street Cafe offers a bright and casual dining experience that effortlessly blends the intimacy of a neighborhood diner with the vibrant energy of the Upper West Side. This cafe is a treasure trove for breakfast and lunch lovers looking for quality, comfort, and thoughtful culinary flair in one convenient location.

The menu showcases a diverse range of American classics elevated with fresh ingredients and generous portions. Whether you're craving the hearty Breakfast Platter or indulging in the buttery, fluffy Buttermilk Pancakes drizzled with 100% Vermont Maple Syrup, every dish is crafted to awaken your senses. The Hot Honey Chicken Sandwich delivers a perfect balance of heat and sweetness, while the Prime Beef options, like the juicy Spicy Steak Sandwich or the classic French Dip, promise satisfying and savory flavors that linger delightfully on the palate.

Beyond breakfast staples, the cafe impresses with more refined choices such as the Spring Salad bursting with fresh garden notes, the richly earthy Wild Mushroom dish, and the elegant American Rib Lamb Chops that feel indulgent yet approachable. For those seeking lighter fare, the Fruit Plate and the crisp Grilled Artichokes offer refreshing alternatives.

What truly sets Fairway 74th Street Cafe apart is its inviting atmosphere and attentive service. The second-floor location overlooks bustling Broadway, creating an energized yet comfortable space perfect for a quick morning boost or a casual midday meal. Customers frequently praise the warm, genuine attentiveness of the waitstaff—Jivan, for example, is noted for being both efficient and friendly—while chefs like Jerry add elegant touches, such as meticulously diced cucumbers in salads, that reflect a thoughtful approach to each plate.

Regular patrons echo the sentiment that the cafe strikes an ideal balance between quality and value. With coffees like the expertly crafted cortado and sizeable portions like the challah French toast, it's clear this spot doesn’t compromise flavor or experience, even if the setting leans toward functional rather than lounging. Carol Mills’s glowing review of the “best omelette in the city” and Theresa C’s delighted recommendation of the authentic avocado toast illustrate the cafe’s consistent ability to please diverse palates.

Whether you're grabbing a cup of robust coffee to fuel your day, savoring a perfectly cooked Steak and Eggs, or soaking in the views with a large cappuccino and a seasonal salad, Fairway 74th Street Cafe invites you to enjoy familiar favorites with a touch of thoughtful refinement. It’s a reliable gem on the Upper West Side, ideal for solo diners, friends, or families seeking delicious food in a friendly, bright setting.

nice second floor cafe in Fairway supermarket. The cortado cafe was great and the "big breakfast" was good. Nice window view. Good place for a quick breakfast but does not look like a place to seat and relax. Bill was $30 before tip for 2 coffes and one breakfast.

A hidden gem on the Upper Westside. You climb the stairs to the second floor. Breakfast with a view of the action on Broadway. Seriously the best omelette in the city. And you can have salad instead of potatoes. A lovely large cappuccino rounds out a perfect morning. Waitstaff is lovely. Always a smile when I come in! And Jerry the chef cuts the cucumbers very tiny in your salad. An elegant touch. Come for Breakfast lunch and dinner. You will not be disappointed! Alisa took great care of me!

Update: Two weeks later, I tried the Cafe again, and it was much improved so I am upgrading my review from 3 to 4 stars. The food was much better prepared. The pancakes were much lighter, not fried in oil, and the eggs were done perfectly. The service was great too. Jivan was quick, efficient, and wonderfully friendly. The prices also are very reasonable for NYC. My only complaints are that they served fake maple syrup (when the menu specifies real maple syrup), and the temperature in the restaurant was quite cool (<65 degrees). I am hoping the next time is even better. Old review below: This place needs much improvement to get to its former glory before the pandemic. I was thrilled to see the cafe reopen. It previously was by far the best breakfast spot in Manhattan. Now, it is a shadow of its former self. Though, I think it could improve. Let's start with the coffee. They are serving a traditional diner urn swill. Before the pandemic, it had great-tasting coffee served with proper half and half. Now it rivals office coffee that has been sitting on the burner for three hours. Please upgrade your coffee. (And serve it with a spoon, not a swizzle stick). Now to the pancakes. Get rid of the oil!!! The pancakes were cooked in oil and were not the fluffy, angelic ones of yore. The chefs use oil as a shortcut to cook the pancakes faster. Go back to the old ways. Now the eggs. I ordered eggs over easy. They came like rubber. I had to send them back. They were adequately done, but again, the oil! Please use butter and less lubrication. Service. The service was friendly and accommodating but a bit slow, given that few people were in the restaurant. I asked for fruit, but they brought me potatoes. They finally brought the fruit, some of which was frozen. I still hope that some of these problems will be fixed. If they are not, Fairway Cafe is just another ordinary NYC diner. I hope they can restore the quality of the food to its "Sure, I'll wait in line for a half-hour" glory.

Came for breakfast and the food was great! Get the avocado toast - it is real avocado spread, not just from a jar. It was delicious! It is located on the second floor of a supermarket. Service was friendly and sweet!

The food, service, and atmosphere were all amazing when we dined there on a relaxing Saturday morning. The portion of the dishes was big enough to fill our empty bellies. The view was great. Our waiter was very professional and attentive. Other staff were friendly. My family enjoyed a nice experience there.
